Focal Plane Imaging of Coherent Laser Beams - #Aestetic #opticaldiagnostics of air turbulence

The movie shows the intensity profile and the spatial location of a laser beam near the focal plane of a lens. The ideal intensity profile is a #gaussian function. The fluctuations of these properties are induced by air turbulence. The contribution from vibrations is small as shown in stagnant air (the second part of the movie). The laser beam diameter at the focal point is about 50 microns. A number of consecutive images are color coded and combined to generate one frame of this movie.
